Stabilised drones: what they are and when to use them

What it means for a drone to be stabilised, what it adds to the image and which projects it's best for.

What is a stabilised drone?

A stabilised drone carries its camera on a gimbal, a motorised mount that keeps it steady even when the drone moves or it's windy. It also has GPS and assisted flight modes. The result is sharp photos and smooth, fluid video, ideal for showing estates, buildings, landscapes or building sites with wide, clean shots.

Videos filmed with stabilised drones

What stabilisation brings

Smooth image

The gimbal absorbs the drone's movements and the video comes out fluid, with no jolts.

  • Fluid video
  • Panoramic shots
  • Slow movements

Assisted flight

With GPS the drone holds its position, which allows precise, repeatable and very clean shots.

  • Repeatable shots
  • Stable position
  • Estates and building sites

Sharp photos

A steady camera makes for well-defined photographs, useful for websites, catalogues and documentation.

FAQs about stabilised drones

What is a stabilised drone?

It's a drone whose camera is mounted on a gimbal, a motorised mount that keeps it steady and gives smooth, sharp images.

What is a gimbal?

It's a motorised mount, usually three-axis, that compensates for the drone's movements so the camera doesn't shake.

What's the difference between a stabilised drone and an FPV one?

A stabilised drone gives smooth, wide and precise shots, with assisted flight. An FPV drone gives fast, close shots full of movement, and it's flown manually.

Which projects suit a stabilised drone best?

Aerial photography and video of estates, accommodation, properties, landscapes, building sites, mapping and weddings, among others.

Can a stabilised drone fly in wind?

It copes better with gentle gusts, but strong wind, rain or poor visibility still limit the flight. If it isn't safe to fly, we find another date.

How much does a job with a stabilised drone cost?

It depends on what you need, the time on site and travel. Tell me about the project and I'll send you a fixed quote.

Do you work all over Catalonia?

Yes, I work all over Catalonia, based in Girona. If it's outside Catalonia, we can talk about it.
